RX 7700 XT vs RX 7800 XT — entry QHD 12 GB or comfortable 1440p 16 GB in the same Newegg filter?
You probably landed here from r/buildapc, a r/buildapcsales alert, or a PCPartPicker list stuck between $375 and $550 before sales tax. Common mistake: treating this like a brand duel such as 4060 vs 7700 XT or 4060 Ti vs 7800 XT. Here you are comparing two RDNA 3 Navi 32 cards in the same red ecosystem: RX 7700 XT (12 GB, 192-bit bus, ~245 W, $400–$500) against RX 7800 XT (16 GB, 256-bit bus, ~263 W, $475–$600). In plain raster the 7800 XT leads ~8–12% (Cyberpunk 1080p: ~108 vs ~98 FPS). No DLSS or NVENC on either side — the real US question: does +$100 to +$100 for 4 GB and +44% memory bandwidth match your monitor and games?

Which GPU for your use case?
- Casual / single-playerBoth dominate 1080p. The RX 7800 XT adds ~8–12% FPS — useful on ultra, not required for ranked.
- 1080p competitive (high FPS)For eSports both exceed 200 FPS at 1080p. The 7800 XT is faster; alone it does not justify +$80 on pure Full HD.
- 1440p / light creationAt 1440p the gap widens (~78 vs ~68 FPS Cyberpunk). The 7800 XT targets QHD ultra; the 7700 XT holds high comfortably.
Bottom line
Pick the RX 7700 XT if you stay on 1080p, run a tight budget (~$375–$450), or 1440p high is enough.
Choose the RX 7800 XT if you target 1440p ultra, 16 GB, or a sale gap < ~$60 (~$425–$550).
FPS varies with CPU, drivers, and scene. Use the PC4Games comparator for picks tied to your games.
PC4Games verdict — two tiers in the same AMD stack
RX 7800 XT if you target 1440p high/ultra without compromise, want 16 GB for AAA textures and mods, or a sale closes the gap under ~$100 (7800 XT near ~$475 vs 7700 XT near ~$500). This is AMD's « comfortable QHD » card from Gamescom 2023.
RX 7700 XT if GPU budget is tight, you mostly play 1080p ultra or 1440p high without heavy mods, or you are building a ~$1,000 gaming PC and $60–$80 should go to RAM/SSD instead of shaders.
Auto-stub trap: « pick the 7700 XT for DLSS 3 / NVENC » or « the 7700 XT has 16 GB » — wrong on all three. These are AMD GPUs: FSR 3, AMF, 12 GB (7700) vs 16 GB (7800). Filter your library on the PC4Games comparator before checkout.
Why r/buildapc stacks these SKUs — and why the MSRP gap lies
Retail filters for « $400–$500 graphics card » return 7700 XT, 7800 XT, and sometimes a sale 7900 XT or used 4070 — hence the weekly threads. MSRP: 7700 XT at $449, 7800 XT at $499 — only $50 apart on paper, but US street pricing often shows $60–$100 before tax even when a Pulse dips near $400 on Newegg.
Typical post: « 27″ 1440p, Team Red only, is 12 GB enough?, RM650 fine — 7700 or 7800? » The answer hinges on ultra vs high and how long you keep the card (mods, Starfield, TLOU max textures), not the identical Radeon logo.
This page is not AMD vs NVIDIA: it picks between these two Radeons with July 2026 US pricing and GpuComparison bars at the top.
Same Navi 32, different bus and VRAM
RX 7700 XT: 3,456 shaders, 12 GB GDDR6, 192-bit, 432 GB/s, 54 ray accelerators — AMD markets it as « up to 1440p » on retailer spec sheets. A trimmed Navi 32 die.
RX 7800 XT: 3,840 shaders (+11%), 16 GB, 256-bit, 624 GB/s (+44%), 60 RT cores — same RDNA 3 architecture, but a less cut-down die with bandwidth closer to a 4070 in raster.
Stuck between red and green? See 4060 vs 7700 XT (Nvidia 1080p vs AMD entry QHD) or 4070 vs 7800 XT. One tier up on Team Red: 7800 XT vs 7900 XT.

1080p — both are oversized; the 7800 XT sells headroom
Warzone 1080p: ~158 vs ~175 FPS. Fortnite: ~178 vs ~196 FPS. Both clear 240 Hz on competitive presets — the 7800 XT leaves more cushion on ultra (Hogwarts ~86 vs ~96 FPS).
In Valorant, CS2, Apex ranked, a 7700 XT already pushes 200+ FPS. The 7800 XT gap is invisible on a 24″ 1080p 240 Hz panel — plenty of r/buildapc posts call a 7800 XT on pure Full HD overspend.
Staying on 1080p for years? 7700 XT — or RX 7600 if budget blocks. The 7800 XT only makes sense with a QHD upgrade planned.
1440p — where the ~$80 gap pays off (or does not)
Cyberpunk 1440p: ~68 vs ~78 FPS. Hogwarts Legacy: ~60 vs ~69 FPS. RDR2: ~78 vs ~88 FPS. The ~10 FPS margin is steady — the 7800 XT targets ultra smooth without dropping textures; the 7700 XT stays playable high/ultra on most of the catalog.
On a 27″ 1440p 144 Hz panel, the 7700 XT is enough for high on recent AAA. The 7800 XT adds margin on ultra and heavy loads (Starfield, Alan Wake 2 raster) — that is the main buy argument, not 12 GB alone.
Just bought QHD? If the sale gap is < ~$60, grab the 7800 XT. If the 7700 XT Pulse sits at ~$425 and the 7800 XT at ~$550, the 7700 XT wins $/FPS at QHD.
12 GB vs 16 GB — the real topic behind the +$80
The stub assigning 16 GB to the 7700 XT swaps the cards: 12 GB / 192-bit (7700) vs 16 GB / 256-bit (7800). Double-check the product page before paying.
At 1440p high, 8–10 GB still suffices on many titles. The 7800 XT's 16 GB helps at 1440p ultra, heavy mods, light 4K FSR, or VRAM-hungry ports (TLOU Part I, Starfield high textures). At 1440p medium/high, 7700 XT 12 GB holds in 2026.
Streaming or editing with AMF? Both cards are equivalent — see gaming PC streaming guide. For light 4K or creation workloads, the 7800 XT benefits more from bandwidth than shaders alone.
FSR 3, RDNA 3 RT — no DLSS here (stub fix)
Neither the 7700 XT nor the 7800 XT runs DLSS 3 or NVENC — the stub copied an Nvidia template. Both support FSR 3 (Frame Generation where adopted) and FSR 2 Quality at 1440p.
On RT ultra, RDNA 3 still trails Ada on several AAA ports — but you are comparing two Radeons: the 7800 XT has +6 RT cores and more bandwidth, so a slight AMD-on-AMD edge in DXR.
Hesitating because of ray tracing? The meaningful jump is often to Nvidia (4070 vs 7800 XT), not 7700 → 7800 for RT alone.
245 W vs 263 W — nearly the same PSU story
Reference power: ~245 W (7700) vs ~263 W (7800) — only ~18 W apart. A 650 W Corsair RM or be quiet! Pure Power 12 M runs both fine with Ryzen 5 7600 / i5-13400F.
Length: some 7800 XT AIB cards (~310 mm, dual 8-pin) exceed 7700 XT models (~280 mm). Measure clearance before an Amazon one-click — especially in Micro-ATX.
The stub claiming the 7700 XT is « much more efficient for small PSUs » is half true: the delta is tiny. Both want a comfortable 650 W 80+ Bronze/Gold. Details: gaming PC PSU guide.
Amazon, Newegg, Micro Center — price bands July 2026
RX 7700 XT new: $400–$500 (Pulse, Gaming OC, Challenger). Gaming OC models brush $470+ before tax; Pulse and r/buildapcsales alerts sometimes hit ~$400. Above ~$500, open the 7800 XT tab first.
RX 7800 XT new: $475–$600 (Pulse, Merc 310, XFX Speedster). Sales near ~$475 pop up on Newegg; outside promos, $480–$550 on Amazon. At ~$550, compare a sale 7900 XT or a used 4070.
Used eBay / Facebook Marketplace: a tested 7800 XT under ~$340 flips the math against a new 7700 XT at ~$475 — FurMark plus your reference game before paying. Tracker: US GPU price study.
Six buyer lanes — without paying for invisible shaders
1080p 240 Hz competitive → RX 7700 XT; 7800 XT is raster luxury.
1440p high, tight budget → RX 7700 XT on a < ~$420 sale.
1440p ultra, mods, hungry games → RX 7800 XT — 16 GB and 624 GB/s matter.
AMF stream / creator → parity; buy whichever is cheaper or quieter.
Compact case, RM650 → both OK; check 7800 XT card length first.
Hard cap ~$425 GPU new → 7700 XT; 7800 XT is out of band unless used.
In between? If you can add ~$120, look at 7900 XT or 1440p gaming PC. Big picture: best graphics card 2026.
