RTX 4060 vs RX 7700 XT — 1080p Ada card or AMD's 1440p step-up in the same Newegg filter?
You probably landed here from r/buildapc, a r/buildapcsales GPU alert, or a PCPartPicker build stuck between $300 and $450 before sales tax. The mistake: treating these as direct rivals. This is not 4060 vs RX 7600 (same ~$250–$320 band) or 4060 Ti vs RX 7800 XT (one tier up on both sides). You are comparing an RTX 4060 (AD107, 8 GB, 128-bit bus, ~115 W, $325–$400 new) against an RX 7700 XT (Navi 32, 12 GB, 192-bit bus, ~245 W, $400–$500). In plain raster the 7700 XT leads ~10–15 % at 1080p and more at 1440p (Cyberpunk 1080p: ~98 vs ~88 FPS). The 4060 fights back with DLSS 3, NVENC, and half the board power. The real US question: « I am staying on 1080p — does +$100 for the 7700 XT show up on my monitor? »

Which GPU for your use case?
- Casual / single-playerBoth handle 1080p fine. The RX 7700 XT adds ~10–15 % FPS — useful on ultra, not required for ranked.
- 1080p competitive (high FPS)For eSports both clear 144 FPS at 1080p. The 7700 XT is faster; alone it does not justify +$80 if you stay pure 1080p.
- 1440p / light creationAt 1440p the gap widens (~68 vs ~58 FPS Cyberpunk). The 7700 XT targets QHD; the 4060 lives on DLSS Quality.
Bottom line
Pick the RTX 4060 if you stay on 1080p, stream, or run a 550 W PSU / compact case.
Choose the RX 7700 XT if you target 1440p high or want 12 GB without permanent upscaling.
FPS varies with CPU, drivers, and scene. Use the PC4Games comparator for picks tied to your games.
PC4Games verdict — two tiers, not one universal winner
RX 7700 XT if you target 1440p high without living on upscaling, want 12 GB for texture-heavy AAA, or play 1080p ultra with wide FPS headroom (Fortnite ~178 vs ~165 FPS). AMD positions it against a 4060 Ti, not the base 4060.
RTX 4060 new if your monitor stays 1080p 144 Hz for years, you stream (NVENC), run an ITX/SFF case, or your PSU is a 550 W unit with little margin. In pure ranked play the 7700 XT is often paid raster you will not display.
Auto-stub trap: « the 4060 has 12 GB » or « buy the 4060 new for best overall performance » — wrong on both. Here it is 8 GB Nvidia vs raster AMD. Filter your library on the PC4Games comparator before checkout.
Why r/buildapc keeps stacking these SKUs — and why it is not a fair fight
Retail filters for « $300–$450 graphics card » return 4060, 4060 Ti, 7700 XT, and sometimes a sale 7800 XT — hence the weekly threads. MSRP tells the story: 4060 at $299, 7700 XT at $449. Street gap is usually ~$60–$100 even when a Pulse dips near $400 on Newegg.
Typical post: « 1080p only, RT matters, 12 GB sounds safer, RM650 is fine — 4060 or 7700 XT? » The answer hinges on your monitor in 18 months, not brand loyalty. Plenty of buyers grab the 7700 XT for VRAM headlines, then game on a 24″ 1080p panel that never uses the extra shaders.
This page is not AMD vs NVIDIA at brand level — it picks between these two SKUs with July 2026 US pricing and the GpuComparison bars at the top.
AD107 1080p entry vs Navi 32 built for 1440p
RTX 4060: 3,072 CUDA, 96 Tensor cores, 272 GB/s bandwidth — NVIDIA designed it for 1080p ultra and DLSS Quality at light 1440p. The 128-bit bus keeps cards near 115 W and often ~8 inches long.
RX 7700 XT: 3,456 shaders, 12 GB, 432 GB/s, 54 ray accelerators — raster lands close to a 4070 on several aggregators, but RT and upscaling trail Nvidia on many recent AAA ports.

1080p — the 4060 clears ranked; the 7700 XT sells headroom
Warzone 1080p: ~142 vs ~158 FPS. Fortnite: ~165 vs ~178 FPS. Both clear 144 Hz on competitive presets — the 7700 XT leaves cushion if you run ultra on Hogwarts (~76 vs ~86 FPS) or keep Discord, a browser, and a light OBS preview open.
In Valorant, CS2, Apex ranked, a 4060 still pushes 200+ FPS without sweating. The 7700 XT gap is comfort, not requirement — Steam's hardware survey still shows 1080p as the most common primary resolution, and a 7700 XT on a 1080p-only rig is often overspend.
24″ 1080p 144 Hz and a tight budget? A 4060 near $350 on Amazon or a Micro Center bundle beats a 7700 XT at $475 if you are not moving to QHD. Put the $60–$80 into 32 GB RAM or a 1 TB NVMe instead.
1440p — where the ~$80 gap starts to make sense
Cyberpunk 1440p: ~58 vs ~68 FPS. Hogwarts Legacy: ~52 vs ~60 FPS. RDR2: ~68 vs ~78 FPS. The margin widens versus 1080p — exactly how AMD markets the 7700 XT (« up to 1440p » on retailer spec sheets).
On a 27″ 1440p 75–144 Hz panel, the 4060 needs DLSS Quality or medium/high on heavy AAA to stay smooth. The 7700 XT targets high/ultra without permanent compromise — that is the main reason to pick it over a 4060, not 12 GB alone at Full HD.
Buying a QHD monitor this year? 7700 XT by default. Staying 1080p until the next full rebuild? 4060 — or RX 7600 if ~$50 still hurts.
8 GB vs 12 GB — fixing the stub's VRAM typo
These cards do not share the same memory layout: 8 GB / 128-bit (4060) vs 12 GB / 192-bit (7700 XT). The production stub claiming « 12 GB on the 4060 » confuses it with a 3060 or 4060 Ti 16 GB — double-check the exact SKU on the product page.
At 1080p high, most titles still use 4–6 GB. The 7700 XT's 12 GB helps at 1440p ultra, heavy mods, or VRAM-hungry ports (Starfield, TLOU Part I with high textures). At vanilla Full HD the 12 GB advantage rarely shows on screen.
Worried about VRAM at 1080p but want AMD raster? Compare 4060 Ti vs RX 7800 XT — closer tier. Budget-blocked? A used 3060 12 GB (~$150–$180 on eBay sold listings) is a different trade — see 4060 vs 3060.
DLSS 3, NVENC, and RT — when software beats raw FPS
Only the 4060 runs DLSS 3 Frame Generation in Cyberpunk, Hogwarts Legacy, Alan Wake 2, Fortnite, and more. The 7700 XT has FSR 3 — spottier adoption, not a FG equivalent on every title. With RT ultra at 1080p, Nvidia stays more efficient; DLSS Quality can let the 4060 hang with the 7700 XT on select DXR games.
Twitch/YouTube streaming: NVENC 8th gen + AV1 on the 4060 — far less CPU load than AMF on the 7700 XT. If you broadcast weekly at 1080p, the Nvidia stack can justify ~$80 even when AMD wins raster.
No RT, no stream, pure FPS per dollar? Software matters less — the 7700 XT wins raster/$. Related: gaming PC streaming guide.
115 W vs 245 W — SFF cases, summer heat, and PSU sizing
Reference power: ~115 W (4060) vs ~245 W (7700 XT) — ~130 W delta under load. A 650 W Corsair RM (common in US builds) runs both fine with a Ryzen 5 7600 / i5-13400F, but the 7700 XT eats PSU headroom and electricity (~$15–$30/year extra at ~3 h/day depending on local rates).
ITX or prebuilt with a 550 W PSU: the 4060 (often single 8-pin, ~200 mm) is the rational pick. Some 7700 XT AIB cards exceed 300 mm and need dual 8-pin — measure clearance before an Amazon one-click.
No-name 500 W OEM PSU? 4060 without debate. 650 W 80+ Bronze/Gold minimum for a comfortable 7700 XT. Details: gaming PC PSU guide.
Amazon, Newegg, Micro Center — price bands July 2026
RTX 4060 new: $325–$400 (Ventus, Dual, Eagle) on Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy. Outside sales, some OC SKUs brush $390 before tax — at that point open the 7700 XT tab first.
RX 7700 XT new: $400–$500 (Pulse, Gaming OC, Challenger). Gaming OC models can sit ~$430+ on Amazon; Pulse and r/buildapcsales alerts sometimes hit ~$400. Above ~$500, compare a 7800 XT or a 4060 Ti.
Used eBay / Facebook Marketplace: a tested 7700 XT under ~$300 flips the math against a new 4060 — run FurMark plus your reference game before paying. Tracker: US GPU price study.
Six buyer lanes — without overspending the GPU tier
1080p 144 Hz ranked, no stream → RTX 4060; 7700 XT is raster luxury.
1080p but AAA ultra + FPS cushion → RX 7700 XT if budget allows; else 4060 + DLSS.
1440p monitor or QHD upgrade this year → 7700 XT — the 4060 lives on upscaling.
OBS streamer, creator, lecture capture → 4060 (NVENC + AV1) unless you encode on a beefy CPU.
Compact case, 550 W PSU, hot apartment → 4060; the 7700 XT warms the room.
Hard cap ~$325 new → 4060 or RX 7600; 7700 XT is out of band.
In between? If you can stretch ~$100, look at 4070 vs 4060 or 1440p gaming PC. Big picture: best graphics card 2026.
