RTX 4070 vs RX 7800 XT — which should you buy in 2026?

This is not a « which company is better » article. It is a use-case split. Raster gamers who mostly crank settings and ignore ray tracing usually get more frames per dollar from the RX 7800 XT — our reference data has it ahead in Cyberpunk 2077, Fortnite, Hogwarts Legacy, and Warzone at 1080p and 1440p, often by ~3–8 % without upscaling.

Nvidia shoppers are often paying for the software stack: DLSS 3 Frame Generation in supported AAA titles, cleaner path tracing with DLSS, NVENC for OBS/Twitch, and a card that runs ~60 W cooler at reference TDP. Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p is one of the few titles where the RTX 4070 can edge ahead in raw FPS — do not assume one card wins every chart.

At 1080p high/ultra, either GPU clears 144 Hz in Valorant, CS2, Apex, and Fortnite performance mode. The RX 7800 XT buys a bit more 1 % low stability in open-world AAA; the RTX 4070 buys quieter fans and headroom if you also edit or stream.

DLSS 3 Frame Generation is Nvidia-only on this comparison. In titles that support it, the 4070 can feel a tier higher than raster charts suggest. The 7800 XT relies on FSR 2/3 — fine for many games, but not the same ecosystem lock-in as DLSS on new AAA launches.
