You probably landed here from r/buildapc, a r/buildapcsales ping, or a PCPartPicker list with a Pulse 7800 XT already in the cart — not from an Nvidia slug. Same RDNA 3 stack, 7800 XT first framing: RX 7800 XT (Navi 32, 16 GB, ~263 W, $475–$600 new before tax) versus RX 7900 XT (Navi 31, 20 GB, ~315 W, $775–$950). In plain raster the 7900 XT leads ~18–23% (Cyberpunk 1080p: ~128 vs ~108 FPS). Both ship FSR 3 and AMF — the stub telling you to pick the 7800 XT for DLSS 3 / NVENC or crediting the 7800 XT with 20 GB is nonsense. This is not 7700 XT vs 7800 XT or 4080 vs 7900 XT: only two high-end Radeons with US street pricing July 2026.

Why « 7800 vs 7900 » search intent — and 7900 XT ≠ 7900 XTX

The order 7800 → 7900 usually means a ~$475 GPU budget is already set and you wonder whether to step up inside Team Red. MSRP gap was $200 ($499 vs $899 at launch); US street pricing often shows +$225 to +$275 between Amazon listings even when a Pulse dips near $475.

The $/FPS math — paying ~55% more for ~20% frames

At ~$475 for a 7800 XT and ~$725 for a typical 7900 XT, you pay ~55% more for ~20% FPS — roughly $12 per extra FPS point on Cyberpunk 1080p, before sales tax.

On a 27″ 1440p 144 Hz monitor, moving from ~78 to ~96 FPS (Cyberpunk 1440p) shifts the experience category: the 7800 XT stays comfortable in high; the 7900 XT inches toward stable native ultra without FSR.

In 1080p competitive, the 7800 XT already clears 175–196 FPS on Warzone or Fortnite. The 7900 XT buys headroom your 24″ 240 Hz panel cannot display — ~$475 GPU in a ~$1,200 gaming PC? The 7800 XT frees budget for 32 GB RAM or a 1 TB SSD instead of invisible shaders.

1080p 240 Hz — the 7800 XT is not the bottleneck

Fortnite 1080p: ~196 vs ~235 FPS. Warzone: ~175 vs ~210 FPS. Both saturate a 24″ 240 Hz panel on competitive presets — the 7900 XT is comfort spend, not a ranked requirement.

On CS2, Valorant, Apex, CPU, RAM, and latency decide outcomes long before 20% GPU margin. Threads pushing the 7900 XT « for 1080p esports » ignore that the 7800 XT is already overkill at that resolution.

Edge case: 1080p60 stream + 1080p240 game with heavy OBS filters. The 7900 XT handles multitasking better — but AMF is identical; the margin is raster, not a different encoder.

1440p ultra and light 4K — where ~20% can actually show up

Cyberpunk 1440p: ~78 vs ~96 FPS. Hogwarts: ~69 vs ~84 FPS. RDR2: ~88 vs ~108 FPS. The gap widens in QHD — the 7900 XT stands out if you skip FSR Quality and want stable native ultra.

With FSR Quality + FG on both cards, the raster hole shrinks: the 7800 XT recovers on AMD-friendly titles. If you already upscale, the 7900 XT loses part of its pitch.

Generic copy « pick the 7800 XT for DLSS 3 / NVENC » is wrong: these are AMD GPUs — FSR 3, Reflex (where supported), and AMF on both. That is not a reason to choose the 7800 XT.

« The 7900 XT is more efficient » or « buy the 7800 XT new for top performance » — backwards: the 7900 XT wins raster; the 7800 XT wins $/FPS and watts (263 vs 315 W). 750 W Gold recommended for the 7900 XT; 650 W is fine for the 7800 XT with Ryzen 5 / Core i5.

7900 XTX, RX 9070 XT, and prebuilts — traps outside this page

7900 XTX 24 GB: different die, different money (~$850–$1,000 launch MSRP, ~$700–$800 street in 2026 on good weeks). Do not compare it here to the 7800 XT 16 GB.

RX 9070 XT: if it lands ≤ ~$550 new with raster near a 7900 XT, both 7800 XT and 7900 XT leave the table — watch r/buildapcsales before you lock a cart.

Prebuilt Best Buy / CyberPowerPC with 7900 XT OEM: check TDP, length, and PSU (often 750 W tight). Sometimes a 7800 XT config at the same out-the-door price is healthier — PC buying mistakes.
