RTX 4060 Ti vs RX 7800 XT — Nvidia's 1080p Ti or AMD's 1440p brute force?
The 4060 Ti vs 7800 XT thread on r/buildapc keeps resurfacing because checkout prices overlap — $400–$500 for a new RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB, $375–$475 for a RX 7800 XT on Amazon, Newegg, or Best Buy (before sales tax). They are not the same tier. Nvidia markets the 4060 Ti as a 1080p card (128-bit bus, 288 GB/s); AMD launched the 7800 XT at Gamescom 2023 as a 1440p GPU (16 GB, 624 GB/s, raster closer to a 4070). In our raster benches the 7800 XT leads — roughly 10–18 % at 1080p, more at 1440p (Fortnite 1080p: ~206 vs ~186 FPS). The 4060 Ti fights back with DLSS 3, Reflex, NVENC, and 160 W vs 263 W. This is not 4070 vs 7800 XT (two 1440p cards) or 4060 Ti vs 3060 Ti (two 8 GB Tis) — here you are picking monitor resolution and software stack at the same GPU budget.

Which GPU for your use case?
- Casual / single-playerBoth GPUs stay very playable at 1080p. The RX 7800 XT has more headroom in recent AAA titles.
- 1080p competitive (high FPS)For competitive gaming both reach high FPS. The RX 7800 XT is slightly faster.
- 1440p / light creationAt 1440p the gap widens in favour of the RX 7800 XT. The RTX 4060 Ti still makes sense for older titles or medium settings.
Bottom line
Pick the RTX 4060 Ti if DLSS 3, NVENC streaming or lower power draw matter to you.
Choose the RX 7800 XT if buying new: better overall performance.

r/buildapc's price trap — faster AMD, cheaper AMD, same cart total
Tom's Hardware and HardwareDB aggregates still show the RX 7800 XT ahead in plain raster on most titles — typical gap 8–15 % on average, wider when memory bandwidth matters. AMD's Navi 32 (3,840 shaders, 60 RT cores) simply outguns the smaller AD106 die in the 4060 Ti (4,352 CUDA, narrow bus).
The US buyer trap: a 7800 XT near $375 on a Newegg shell shocker can undercut a 4060 Ti at $425 while delivering +20 FPS in Fortnite or Hogwarts Legacy at 1080p. Plenty of builders default to Nvidia, then wonder why their new 1440p 144 Hz monitor feels capped.
This page answers a real search intent: « I have ~$400 for a GPU — what now? » Not « which card wins every benchmark » (the 7800 XT does in raster), but what monitor, games, and PSU you already own.
Launch MSRP tells you the target resolution
RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB: $399 MSRP, ~160 W, often single 8-pin — built for 1080p high/ultra and 240 Hz competitive with DLSS headroom. The 128-bit bus keeps power low; at 1440p ultra bandwidth becomes the bottleneck before raw shader count.
RX 7800 XT: $499 MSRP, 263 W TBP, 16 GB GDDR6 — AMD pitched it as the ultimate 1440p upgrade at Gamescom 2023. Street pricing in 2026 often sits between 4060 Ti and 4070 in raster, with 16 GB that matters the moment you raise texture quality.
Building a ~$1,000 gaming PC? GPU choice usually locks resolution: 4060 Ti + 24″ 1080p 240 Hz vs 7800 XT + 27″ 1440p 144 Hz — coherent builds, not drop-in swaps without changing your monitor plan.

1080p high-refresh — when the 4060 Ti is the rational pick
Fortnite 1080p: ~186 vs ~206 FPS — both clear 240 Hz on low comp settings, but the 7800 XT keeps more margin with Discord, Chrome, or a light OBS overlay. Warzone: ~160 vs ~178 FPS — AMD's cushion shows up in late-zone fights on a 144 Hz panel.
For Valorant, CS2, Apex ranked at 1080p, a 4060 Ti still pushes 200+ FPS on most maps — the 7800 XT gap is comfort, not requirement. If you are on a 24″ 1080p 144/240 Hz panel with no QHD upgrade planned, the Ti does not hold you back.
Hidden Nvidia edge: Reflex cuts input latency on supported shooters — relevant in ranked even when AMD rasterizes faster. Mainly 1080p ranked? The Ti holds up. You want maxed AAA at 1080p? The 7800 XT wins even without raising resolution.
1440p — bandwidth and VRAM flip the script
Cyberpunk 1440p: ~73 vs ~82 FPS. Hogwarts Legacy: ~65 vs ~74 FPS. Fortnite 1440p: ~123 vs ~145 FPS. The gap widens vs 1080p — exactly where AMD tuned the 7800 XT.
On a 27″ 1440p 144 Hz display, the 7800 XT targets high/ultra without living on DLSS Quality; the 4060 Ti needs upscaling or medium presets on recent AAA to stay smooth. Skip upscaling and many builders go from « fine » to stutter city once textures climb.
Just bought QHD or upgrading this year? 7800 XT is the raster default. Staying 1080p for years? Paying +$100 for a 7800 XT you will not feed is a common r/buildapc regret.
The 8 GB wall — Starfield, mods, and ultra texture packs
4060 Ti 8 GB and 7800 XT 16 GB are not in the same VRAM class. At 1080p high, 4–6 GB still covers most of the Steam top 100. At 1440p ultra or heavy titles (Starfield, TLOU Part I, max-texture Cyberpunk), the Ti hits the ceiling — hitching, forced medium textures, VRAM spikes in Task Manager.
NVIDIA also sells a 4060 Ti 16 GB (~$500+): gaming benches show 0–3 % over the 8 GB card — mainly for local AI, huge mods, or multi-app workflows. At current US pricing, a 7800 XT near $475 often delivers more FPS and 16 GB for less than a Ti 16 GB.
Running Skyrim/Fallout mod lists or 4K texture packs? 7800 XT avoids the VRAM cliff. Vanilla 1080p gamer? 8 GB on the Ti remains defensible in 2026 — pair with sane system RAM via 16 GB vs 32 GB for gaming.
DLSS 3, ray tracing, and the NVENC creator lane
Only the 4060 Ti runs DLSS 3 Frame Generation (Cyberpunk, Hogwarts Legacy, Alan Wake 2, Fortnite…). The 7800 XT has FSR 3 — spottier support, not a 1:1 FG substitute on every launch. Cyberpunk RT ultra 1080p can feel twice as smooth with FG; in raster, AMD still leads.
Ray tracing: Nvidia is more efficient per watt at equal settings. RT always on + DLSS? The Ti can hang with the 7800 XT in titles like Cyberpunk DXR (Tom's Hardware noted rare RT wins for Ada). RT off forever? AMD wins most charts.
Twitch/YouTube at 1080p60: NVENC gen 8 + AV1 on the 4060 Ti — less CPU load, cleaner image at the same bitrate than AMF on AMD. Regular streamers often pay the Nvidia tax here. See gaming PC for streaming and AMD vs NVIDIA.
160 W in ITX vs 263 W in a Midwest summer
Reference board power: 4060 Ti ~160 W · 7800 XT ~263 W — roughly 100 W under load. In a dorm or bedroom without AC, that difference is fan noise and room heat, not just a spec sheet line.
With Ryzen 5 7600 / Core i5-13400F: 550 W 80+ Gold is fine for the 4060 Ti; for the 7800 XT, plan 650–700 W — especially on overclocked CPUs or 500 W no-name PSUs in discount prebuilts.
ITX or tight GPU length? 4060 Ti cards (~240 mm, single 8-pin) slip into NR200-class cases. Some 7800 XT AIB models exceed 300 mm — measure clearance before you buy. More: gaming PSU sizing.
US checkout math — tax, Micro Center, Marketplace
RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB new: $400–$500 (Ventus, Dual, Eagle) on Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy. Above ~$430 before tax, cross-shop a 7800 XT every time.
RX 7800 XT new: $375–$475 (Pulse, Gaming OC, Challenger). Micro Center bundle deals can beat online by $30–80 if you live near a store. Listed prices are before sales tax — add 0–10 %+ depending on state.
eBay / Facebook Marketplace: a tested 7800 XT under ~$300 can destroy a new 4060 Ti on raster — run FurMark + your main game before paying. A 4060 Ti around $280–320 used still makes sense for NVENC and 160 W. Monthly index: US GPU price study.
Five buyer lanes — stop treating this like a spec-sheet duel
1080p 144/240 Hz ranked, no stream → 4060 Ti, or RX 7600 if cash is tight; 7800 XT is overspend.
1080p but you want max raster / AAA ultra → 7800 XT — spend the FPS headroom, not higher resolution.
1440p 144 Hz now or within a year → 7800 XT; the 4060 Ti will lean on DLSS daily.
OBS streamer / creator → 4060 Ti (NVENC + AV1) unless you encode on a strong CPU.
550 W PSU, ITX, hot apartment → 4060 Ti; the 7800 XT wants airflow and PSU margin.
Stuck between lanes? Adding ~$60–80 steps you into 4070 vs 7800 XT territory. Coming from used Ampere? See RTX 3080 vs 4060 Ti.
