RTX 4080 Super vs RTX 4080 — 2024 refresh default or vetted used 4080 on eBay?
The 4080 Super or original 4080? thread on r/buildapc, Tom's Hardware, and LTT resurfaces whenever a GPU budget crosses ~$1,400 — often right after a 4090 vs 4080 comparison. Here: two AD103 Ada Lovelace cards with 16 GB GDDR6X and ~320 W reference TDP. The RTX 4080 Super (Jan 2024) unlocks more CUDA on the same die; the RTX 4080 (Nov 2022) lives on leftover inventory or the used market. In plain raster the gap sits around ~7–10 % (Cyberpunk 1080p: ~165 vs ~154 FPS). This is not a generational leap — NVIDIA repositioned MSRP on the same silicon. This guide is not 4080 vs RX 7900 XT (Nvidia vs AMD) or 4090 vs 4080 (tier above): you are deciding new buy, eBay/Facebook, and 4080 → Super upgrade (almost never worth it).

Which GPU for your use case?
- Casual / single-playerBoth dominate 1080p and 1440p ultra. The RTX 4080 Super adds ~7–10 % FPS — hard to notice day to day, but comfortable at 4K with DLSS.
- 1080p competitive (high FPS)For eSports both clear 240 FPS at 1080p. The Super is slightly faster; alone it does not justify an upgrade if you already own a 4080.
- 1440p / light creationAt 1440p ultra the Super margin (~10–15 FPS on AAA) shows on heavier titles. For competitive 1440p both are more than enough.
Bottom line
Pick the RTX 4080 Super on a new buy: current NVIDIA catalog, warranty, and a small FPS edge.
Choose the RTX 4080 if you find one under ~$975 tested (eBay, open-box) — nearly identical performance.

Why this duel keeps trending — and why it is not a real upgrade
NVIDIA launched the 4080 Super in January 2024 to tighten the Ada high end: more active cores on AD103, same 16 GB, same 320 W — a price/perf repositioning, not a new chip. The original 4080 is EOL new stock on Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, and Micro Center in July 2026.
Common forum mistake: thinking the Super doubles FPS or adds VRAM. Wrong: you are mostly paying for ~10 % raster and a SKU still on shelf. Comparing AMD? See 4080 vs 7900 XT — different trade (16 vs 20 GB, raster/$).
Real search intent: « I am building a ~$1,500 GPU tier PC — Super new or a tested used 4080 under ~$1,125? » Not « which card wins every chart » (the Super in raster), but checkout price, warranty, and monitor.
Same AD103, same 16 GB — only unlocked CUDA changes
On paper, VRAM is equal: 16 GB GDDR6X, 256-bit bus, Ada Lovelace. Unlike 4070 vs 4060, you are not buying memory — you are buying more throughput on the same die.
The 4080 Super activates more CUDA cores on AD103 — hence +7 to +10 % in games (Fortnite 1080p: ~310 vs ~289 FPS). In heavy mods or 4K textures, neither card « wins » on memory: same 16 GB ceiling.
Gamers Nexus and US reviewers position the Super as the rational new buy in 2024–2026; the classic 4080 only makes sense on a steep discount or vetted used deal below a clear price floor.

1080p — both are overkill; the Super sells comfort
Fortnite 1080p: ~310 vs ~289 FPS. Warzone: ~267 vs ~249 FPS. Both clear 240 Hz on competitive presets — the Super keeps more margin with Discord, Chrome, or a light OBS overlay.
On Valorant, CS2, Apex ranked, a classic 4080 still pushes 300+ FPS on most maps. The Super gap is cushion, not requirement. Locked on a 24″ 1080p 240 Hz panel with no QHD upgrade planned? A used 4080 does not hold you back.
At 1080p, CPU often becomes the limiter again — check your profile on Intel vs AMD gaming before overpaying for Super FPS you will not see.
Native 1440p ultra — where ~10 % starts to matter
Cyberpunk 1440p: ~131 vs ~122 FPS. Hogwarts Legacy: ~117 vs ~109 FPS. RDR2: ~156 vs ~143 FPS. The gap widens slightly vs 1080p — natural territory for both cards on a 27″ 1440p 165 Hz display.
On 1440p ultra, the 4080 Super holds high/ultra with more room before DLSS Quality; the 4080 stays very comfortable — often +8–13 FPS apart, not a different GPU class.
Chasing locked 144 Hz in AAA without touching presets? The Super defends itself — if pricing stays close. Otherwise 4080 + DLSS Quality covers most US buyers at this tier.
4K, ray tracing, and DLSS 3 — same Nvidia stack
Both run DLSS 3 Frame Generation, Reflex, and 8th–9th gen NVENC — 1440p60 or 4K30 streaming is fine on either. The Super absorbs high RT + FG slightly better — Cyberpunk RT Overdrive stays demanding on both.
In native 4K ultra, neither card « solves » everything without DLSS: the Super adds a few FPS — useful if you refuse Quality/Performance. For stable 4K 60, both lean on DLSS in recent AAA titles.
Regular creators: both work; the difference is marginal. Related: gaming PC for streaming · PSU sizing.
320 W on both — 750–850 W PSU and compact cases
Reference TDP ~320 W on both models. The Super may draw a few extra watts under full load (more active CUDA), but stays in the same thermal envelope — unlike 4070 Ti vs 4070 Super (285 vs 220 W).
With Ryzen 7 7800X3D / Core i7: target 750–850 W 80+ Gold — headroom for spikes and light CPU overclock. Under 750 W in a discount Amazon prebuilt, verify the PSU model before paying up for a Super.
ATX mid-tower or tight ITX: triple-fan recommended; length often 320–340 mm. Heat is nearly identical — Super vs 4080 is not a power-draw decision.
Amazon, Micro Center, and eBay — where to buy in 2026
RTX 4080 Super new: $1,125–$1,300 (Ventus, Gaming X, TUF) on Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, Micro Center. Above ~$1,300 before sales tax, cross-shop a tested used 4080 or step toward 4090 vs 4080 if budget allows.
RTX 4080 classic: EOL new in July 2026; open-box or used around $1,075–$1,250. A 4080 under ~$975 with FurMark + your main game can beat a new Super on $/FPS — demand warranty and seller history.
eBay / Facebook Marketplace: 4080 with receipt $850–980 = interesting zone; >$1,050 for non-Super → prefer Super new. Add sales tax at checkout. Index: US GPU price study.
Upgrading from 4070 Ti/Super or 4080 → Super — what jump?
From a 4070 Ti or 4070 Super: either 4080 is a real 1440p/4K leap. The 4080 Super is the logical new buy; a used 4080 only if ~$150 under a new Super at similar condition.
From an RTX 4080 you already own: do not sidegrade to a Super for +7–10 % FPS — ROI is near zero ($200–400 spend). Keep your 4080 unless it fails or you get an excellent trade-in.
From a 3080 / 6800 XT: both Ada cards justify the jump; Super on new buy, 4080 if used < ~$975 tested. Budget tiers: gaming PC $1,500 · gaming PC $2,000.
Six buyer profiles — Super new or discounted 4080
New buy 2026, 1440p/4K → 4080 Super — current catalog, warranty, slight +FPS.
Used 4080 under ~$975 tested → classic 4080 — nearly same experience, better $/FPS.
1080p 240 Hz ranked → both suffice; Super is luxury unless on sale.
4K with DLSS → both; Super adds marginal headroom in native ultra.
OBS stream / creation → NVENC tie; no reason to pay Super if you already own a 4080.
You already have a 4080 → do not switch to Super — save for a future RTX 50 or CPU upgrade.
