RTX 4080 vs RTX 3080 — new Ada flagship or a scored used Ampere deal?

RTX 4080 (new) when you are building or upgrading for 1440p ultra, 4K on a TV or ultrawide, heavy NVENC streaming, or you already hit 10 GB VRAM walls in modded AAA titles.

RTX 3080 (used) when you game at 1080p high/ultra or 1440p medium-high and the card tests clean — ideally under $375 with a GPU-Z screenshot and a stress test, not a « mined, no returns » listing.

Sitting on a 3080 that still feels fine at 1080p? Upgrading to a new 4080 is often a $550–$775 swing for ~30 % more raster FPS on the same monitor — hard to justify unless you are also buying a QHD/4K panel.

Average FPS flatters the 3080 in open worlds: 1 % lows and stutter in dense cities are where the 4080 buys calm. Treat YouTube numbers as a single data point — driver version, BIOS power limit, and RAM capacity all move the needle.

At 1080p, a healthy 3080 already feeds 144–240 Hz in Valorant, CS2, Fortnite ranked, and Apex. The 4080 adds margin — smoother lows with RT left on — not frames your monitor can show.

Buying a new 4080 only for 1080p competitive play is usually poor $/FPS in 2026. A used 3080 or a 4070 Super tier often covers the same panel for far less; save the delta for a 1440p 165 Hz monitor instead.

Exception: you stream + game on one PC with heavy encodes, or you refuse to touch settings in every new AAA — then the 4080 can make sense even at 1080p.

1440p ultra is the 4080's natural home: 60–100+ FPS in recent AAA with DLSS Quality without living in medium presets. The 3080 plays 1440p, but Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk RT, and Starfield push it toward DLSS or trimmed textures sooner.

Hooking a 55" 4K TV or running 3440×1440 ultrawide? 4080 + DLSS is the practical floor for « set and forget » ultra; 3080 at native 4K is a compromise game unless the title is light.

RTX 4080: 16 GB GDDR6X. RTX 3080: 10 GB GDDR6X (watch for rare 12 GB board-partner SKUs — same debate, slightly more headroom). At 1080p high, 10 GB still works for most 2026 releases if you are not stacking Chrome, Discord, and mods.

At 1440p ultra, HD texture packs, UE5 cities, or modded Starfield / Cyberpunk sessions tighten 10 GB faster — stutter and forced downgrades show up before average FPS does. That is the honest reason to jump to 16 GB, not bragging rights.

Only RTX 4080 runs DLSS 3 Frame Generation (Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk, Fortnite-compatible titles, etc.) — in *feel*, that can widen the gap beyond our raster bars. Both have DLSS 2 and RT; Ada is simply faster in ray-traced scenes.

Reference TDP ~320 W on both founders-class cards, but NVIDIA's own gaming average for the 4080 is closer to ~251 W — more FPS per watt than Ampere at similar peak labels. Still budget 750 W 80+ Gold with a modern Ryzen 7 / Core i7.

Practical US install pain: many 4080 models are 3-slot, ~12" long — measure your case before a Micro Center impulse buy. Older PSUs may need the 8-pin adapter or a 12VHPWR cable; botched adapters were a real fire risk in 2022–2023 threads — verify pins seat fully.
