RTX 4070 (new) = default 2026 pick: warranty, DLSS 3, 12 GB, ~200 W (quieter, cooler), NVENC gen 9. Best if you are building fresh or want 1440p high without retuning sliders every patch.

RTX 3080 (used) = good deal only under $375, clean card (no artifacts, stable temps), seller with trade history on eBay, r/hardwareswap, or local Marketplace. Above ~$400, a used 3080 loses to a 4070 on sale or a recent 4070 Super open-box.

If you already game on 1080p 144 Hz and find a tested 3080 at $325–$375, raster is plenty. The new 4070 mainly buys thermal headroom, DLSS 3, and RMA peace of mind — not doubled FPS at Full HD.

Tight 1080p budget profile: a clean 3080 can beat a 4070 on raw $/FPS — as long as you are not also buying a new PSU.

The 4070 ships 12 GB GDDR6X — useful for 1440p ultra, light mods, or Chrome + game multitasking. The 3080 at 10 GB still plays fine, but hits limits sooner on Cyberpunk RT ultra or Starfield high textures.

The real software fork: DLSS 3 Frame Generation on the 4070 (Cyberpunk, Hogwarts, Alan Wake 2, Fortnite…). The 3080 caps at DLSS 2 — fine, but without FG smoothness on supported titles.

Used 3080 checklist: demand 10 min FurMark + GPU-Z screenshot (no artifacts, stable temps); avoid suspiciously cheap mining listings; above $425, compare a new 4070 under $450 on r/buildapcsales before you pay.
