WoW Forever on PC: what you need before November 4, 2026
Looking for a World of Warcraft: Forever PC build after Blizzard’s « What’s Next panel recap » (September 13, 2026), a Wowhead thread, or « will my Classic PC run Forever? » Forever is not Midnight, not a mode, not a season, and not « another Classic »: it is a permanent experience at levels 1–60 in original Azeroth, alongside retail and Classic (What’s Next recap). As of September 2026, global launch is November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST (midnight November 5 French time) · beta Sep 17–Oct 22 (to level 30) · pre-launch Oct 27 · raids Dec 9 (10 / 20 / 40 Onyxia). Hardware: a comfortable Classic-class PC (SSD, 16 GB RAM, 4–6-core CPU, GTX 1650+). Budgets $300–$475 upgrade · $600–$825 1080p · $900–$1,150 addons/1440p. The **gameplay trailer** is below. Forever: permanent, not a Classic mode and not Midnight retail
Blizzard is explicit in the September 13, 2026 recap: Forever is not a mode, not a season, and not a new version of WoW Classic. Same Battle.net sub / Game Time, but a separate client and world, fed by Classic and Season of Discovery lessons (recap).
Official calendar (Blizzard 2026–2027 roadmap): beta Sep 17–Oct 22 (up to level 30) · pre-launch October 27 (early name reservation + character creation) · launch November 4 · raids on December 9 (Barrow Deeps 10, Hyjal Summit 20, Onyxia’s Lair 40) · Hardcore in winter · spring / summer 2027 updates (recap, Wowhead roadmap).
Skyborne packs (Heroic / Epic / Collection) stay optional: race, cosmetics, beta access. Base play at launch still needs a sub (pre-purchase). Cross-check the Forever comparator before buying an RTX 4070 « just in case ».
| Window | Milestones | PC impact |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn 2026 | Beta 9/17–10/22 (lv 30) · pre-launch 10/27 · launch 11/4 | SSD + 16 GB for beta / launch day |
| Winter 2026 | Raids 12/9 (10 / 20 / 40) · Forever Hardcore | CPU for 20–40 raids + addons |
| Spring 2027 | 2 raids · 2 dungeons · quests/area · legendary · PvP refresh | Disk headroom for patches |
| Summer 2027 | Revamped iconic raid · new raid · world · professions / Legacy | Growing client: SSD margin |

What the What’s Next recap changes for your PC
Four pillars: an approachable and familiar experience, the world as the main character, leveling that matters as much as endgame, and social play (groups, routes, campsites). In practice: no flying mounts, no level scaling. You cross the world on foot or on a ground mount and load more chained zones, so an SSD matters more than an overpriced GPU.
Rendering gets extra detail (rivers in Elwynn, mist over Darkshore, moonlight in Ashenvale) without leaving the Classic look. Prettier, not an Unreal 5 leap like Midnight. Still, optional HD models plus capitals and 10/20/40 raids can lean on the CPU and a bit of VRAM.
To gauge the feel before you upgrade: the **official gameplay trailer** (YouTube, ~3 min) sits under this guide’s intro.
Zones, 1,000+ quests, and Skyborne: open-world load
Progression 1–60 with more than a thousand new quests. Highlighted zones: Mount Hyjal (after Archimonde), Shen'dralas (between Mulgore and Desolace, Shen’dralar / Eldre’Thalas / Dire Maul thread), the Riverglades (~150 quests mostly mid-30s to mid-40s), Zephras Isle (start 1–12, Skywall vibe) (recap).
Skyborne: new race. You pick Horde (elemental path, Shaman available) or Alliance (arcane legacy, Mage available). Other classes: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid (dedicated forms). Optional packs speed up race / beta access; they are not required to play.
On the PC side: lots of outdoor travel with no flying. A slow disk shows up immediately. Crowded scenes (cities, quest hubs, campsites) stay CPU-bound, same as Classic.
| Zone / element | Gameplay role | Hardware impact |
|---|---|---|
| Zephras Isle | Start 1–12, Skyborne home | Light; SSD for loads |
| Riverglades | Mid 35–45, ~150 quests | Long outdoor: SSD + RAM |
| Shen'dralas | Shen’dralar / Eldre’Thalas lore | Instances + outdoor |
| Hyjal | Story + upcoming raids | 20-player raids: CPU + addons |
| Skyborne | Horde/Alliance race | Optional HD cosmetics |
9 dungeons, 10/20 raids, and 15v15 BGs: where FPS actually dip
Nine dungeons announced (Hall of Thanes beneath Ironforge, Ruins of Lordaeron, excavation above Whelgar’s, chaotic City of Dalaran, Blackmaw Hold, the Drowned City, Krol’dok Stronghold, Alcaz Prison, Shaper’s Terrace).
Raids unlock December 9, 2026: Barrow Deeps (10-player), Hyjal Summit (20-player), and Onyxia’s Lair (40-player). PvP: Darkspear Islands battleground, 15v15, Arathi Basin-style. Hardcore lands in the winter roadmap window (recap).
For the PC: target comfort in 20–40-player raids + addons (Details!, WeakAuras), not solo questing. A Ryzen 5 5600 + 16 GB holds up better than an RTX 4070 on an old quad-core. 40-player Onyxia is the real CPU stress test.
| Content | Size | Hardware priority |
|---|---|---|
| Dungeons (×9) | Typical 5-player | SSD + entry GPU OK |
| Barrow Deeps | 10-player raid | CPU + 16 GB RAM |
| Hyjal Summit | 20-player raid | CPU + addons + 16–32 GB |
| Onyxia’s Lair | 40-player raid | Strong CPU + 32 GB advised |
| Darkspear Islands BG | 15v15 | CPU + Ethernet |
| Hardcore (winter) | Permadeath | Stability over ultra settings |
Legacy, campsites, HD/SD, and controller: options that cost (or don’t)
Legacy progression is mainly for alts: you advance without replaying every early quest like a first character. In practice that means more tabs, more addons, sometimes a second Battle.net client open, so RAM and CPU matter before the GPU.
Outdoor campsites (campfires, professions, group buffs) keep players in the open world instead of teleporting everywhere. With no flying, you load more chained zones: a solid SSD and a decent city/hub CPU do more for comfort than an RTX 4070 « just in case ».
On cosmetics, Blizzard calls out transmog, a modern or Classic look, HD or SD models, restored Classic animations on HD, and official gamepad support. These are comfort options, not an Unreal 5 leap like Midnight.
HD models can cost a little more VRAM and density in busy capitals. During beta, compare HD vs SD in Ironforge / Orgrimmar with Discord and a browser open: if 1% lows tank, drop back to SD for raid nights.
None of that justifies a Midnight budget. If you also play retail M+, keep the Midnight guide for the heavier tower, and this guide for the Forever client.
Specs: no Forever-only sheet yet, PC4Games targets
Still no official separate Forever min / rec table as of September 2026. The WoW support page mostly mirrors retail Midnight (DX12 client, capitals like Dornogal). We stay on a comfortable Classic floor, tuned for no-fly outdoor, 10/20/40 raids, and addons.
The common trap: reading « 8 GB RAM min » on a retail page and assuming that covers Forever + Discord + Details! + a browser. In 2026, 16 GB is the credible floor; 32 GB helps once you stack alts, Legacy, and streaming.
On GPU, a GTX 1650 / RX 6400 (4 GB) holds comfortable 1080p on a Classic+ look. You feel the difference mainly in packed capitals and 20–40 raids, where CPU and RAM take over.
During beta (Sep 17–Oct 22): note average FPS, 1% lows, RAM with addons, and the HD vs SD delta. We will update this guide if Blizzard ships a Forever sheet at launch or after December 9.
| Profile | PC4Games Forever target | Retail Midnight (ref.) |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10/11 64-bit | Windows 10 min. / 11 rec. |
| CPU | 4–6 cores (Ryzen 5 3600 / i5-10400F+) | 6-core Coffee Lake / Zen 2 min. |
| GPU | GTX 1650 / RX 6400 (4 GB) comfort 1080p | GTX 10 / 4 GB VRAM min.; RX 6600 comfort |
| RAM | 16 GB (32 GB addons + Discord + browser) | 8 GB official min.; 16–32 GB comfort |
| Storage | SSD, 80–150 GB free (client + patches) | SSD 128 GB+ free (often 150–200 GB real) |
| API / launcher | Battle.net | Battle.net, DX12 |
Playable minimum vs Hyjal 20 / capital comfort
Playable: i5-8400 + GTX 1050 Ti + SSD + 16 GB for beta and leveling. Drops hit in capitals, 20-player raids, and 15v15 BGs with addons.
Comfortable US 2026: Ryzen 5 5600 (or i5-12400F), 16 GB, RX 6600 / RTX 3060 (or a clean GTX 1660) at 1080p.
1440p / stream: RTX 4060 / RX 7600 + 32 GB if WeakAuras + Details! + OBS. The bottleneck stays the CPU.
| Profile | Typical build | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | i5-8400, 16 GB, GTX 1650, 250 GB SSD | Leveling Zephras → 60, dungeons |
| Comfort 1080p | Ryzen 5 5600, 16 GB, RX 6600, 500 GB SSD | 10/20 raids, BGs, moderate addons |
| Comfort + stream | Ryzen 5 7600, 32 GB, RTX 4060, 1 TB NVMe | HD + heavy addons + OBS |
SSD, second client, and patches through December 9
Forever installs beside Midnight and Classic. Plan 80–150 GB free for the Forever client, on top of retail (often 150–200 GB already) and any Classic Era / SoD client. On a 500 GB SSD already packed with Steam games, you run out of room fast.
With no flying mounts, you change zones often (Riverglades, Hyjal, hub trips). An HDD turns every trip into a loading screen: that is the first upgrade that pays off, before any GPU swap.
A SATA SSD is plenty for Forever. NVMe helps most if you run multiple Battle.net clients or stream at the same time. What matters is headroom for patches, hotfixes, and caches.
December 9, 2026 brings the raids (10 / 20 / 40) and heavier patch days. Leave 20–40 GB free instead of scrubbing the folder every week: on reset nights the launcher likes to download in one go.
If you play Forever + Midnight the same evening, also leave room for two up-to-date clients. A disk at 95% full causes more « mystery » freezes than a GPU one tier too weak.
CPU, addons, subscription, and latency
In Forever, the CPU outranks the GPU once you hit capitals, Hyjal 20, Onyxia 40, or 15v15 BGs. Lots of entities, scripts, and addons: an old quad-core stutters even with an RTX 3060.
A Ryzen 5 5600 (or i5-12400F) refreshes an AM4 / LGA1700 platform without swapping the GPU. That is often the best comfort-per-dollar move for social Classic+ in 2026.
On RAM: 16 GB dual-channel is the real floor. Move to 32 GB if you keep Details!, WeakAuras, DBM, a guide browser, and Discord open, especially in 40-man raids or multi-alts with Legacy.
Addons remain the #1 trap on progression nights: disable the fluff before blaming the GPU. During beta, compare a « fully bagged » raid UI vs a light set to see where your 1% lows go.
A subscription is still required for base launch access (Skyborne packs are optional extras). Use Ethernet on raid / BG nights: Wi-Fi can hold leveling, not always a Hyjal 20 pull with 19 other players.
US budget tiers (September 2026, before sales tax)
Amounts cover an upgrade or full tower. Sub and Skyborne packs are extra.
| Tier | Budget | Target build | Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSD + RAM upgrade | $300–$475 | 500 GB SSD + 16 GB kit | Install unlocked, less outdoor stutter |
| 1080p 10/20 raids | $600–$825 | Ryzen 5 5600 + RX 6600 + 16 GB + SSD | Sweet spot for Forever alone |
| HD + addons / 1440p | $900–$1,150 | Ryzen 5 7600 + RTX 4060 + 32 GB + NVMe | Stream, multi Battle.net clients |
Where to buy / upgrade in the US
Newegg / Amazon / Best Buy: NVMe SSDs, RAM kits, entry/mid GPUs. Compare street prices before checkout.
Used market: Ryzen 5 + GTX 1660 / RTX 3060 towers that already have an SSD. Check 16 GB and room for Forever + retail.
If Classic already runs fine, SSD + 16 GB is often enough. Save the RTX 40 budget for Midnight.
Common mistakes and pre-purchase checklist
Mistake 1: mixing Forever and Midnight. Forever = permanent 1–60. Midnight = current retail.
Mistake 2: thinking it is « just another Classic ». Blizzard rejects that label: dedicated client and roadmap.
Mistake 3: an RTX 4070 for Forever alone. At 1080p Classic+ outdoor, prioritize CPU / SSD / RAM.
Mistake 4: HDD + no flying. Riverglades / Hyjal routes get painful fast.
Mistake 5: forgetting the sub. Skyborne packs ≠ base access on November 4.
Checklist: SSD with headroom · 16 GB · 4–6-core CPU · 4 GB comfort GPU · test HD/SD in beta · Battle.net · Forever comparator.
